We are once again thrilled with our achievements in the 2019 James Halliday Wine Companion. Driftwood Estate’s 5 Black Star rating has been reaffirmed and we have 8 wines with a 90+ point rating. Another fantastic result that we are all incredibly proud of.

2017 Single Site Chardonnay – 97 Points

“Estate blocks 20 and 21, whole-bunch pressed, wild-fermented in French oak, no mlf, matured for 8 months on lees before eight barrels selected for this wine. Here complexity and power are the name of the game, power both in depth and length. Fresh acidity is woven like a thread of silver through a tapestry, orange blossom, lemon curd, white peach and nectarine, pink grapefruit and toasty oak notes come and go.”

2017 Artifacts Chardonnay – 96 Points

“The energy and drive of this wine is exceptional, particularly given its finesse. Indeed, there’s a delicacy to the precise way the components move across the palate and onto the finish and aftertaste.”

2017 Artifacts Sauvignon Blanc Semillon – 95 Points

“71.5% sauvignon blanc, 28.6% semillon, the sauvignon blanc part wild-fermented in barrel, the remainder crushed, chilled and pressed to tank with cultured yeast, most completing fermentation in French oak (30% new). Intensely lively and energetic, with vibrant herb, lemon and crisp acid flavours. It is as much about texture as flavour, and can be enjoyed as much in 5 years as tonight. Length and balance make it seem easy, but it’s not.”

2017 The Collection Chardonnay – 92 Points

“95% chardonnay, 9% pinot gris, hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, half wild-fermented in French oak (9% new), half in tank, no mlf, matured for 8 months on lees. Nothing much should be read into the inclusion of pinot gris – just move on. The bouquet is very expressive and aromatic, and it’s no surprise to find the full gamut of high quality chardonnay fruit flavours from stone fruit (white peach and nectarine) to lemon juice and lemon zest on the long palate, cashew and oak lurking in the background.”

2017 The Collection Shiraz Cabernet – 92 Points

“44.1% shiraz, 43.1% cabernet sauvignon, 5.4% petit verdot, 5.1% malbec, 2% tempranillo, 0.3% merlot fermented separately and matured in a mix of used oak and tanks with staves for 15 months. This is some collection, and some mathematical genius in determining the 0.3% of merlot, and a disdainful eye at the seventh variety (viognier co-fermented with some of the shiraz). A lot of blood, sweat and tears was also added to a wine that could one day knock your socks off, for its superabundant fruits will give it a long afterlife.”

2017 The Collection Classic White – 90 Points

“Artifacts has 0.6g/l of residual sugar, ie is fully dry, whereas this has 7.2g/l. Its sibling was 89% barrel-fermented, this wine made with no oak, residual sugar filling up the flavour profile. They are chalk and cheese.”

2017 The Collection Cabernet Merlot – 90 Points

“Another eclectic collection of 70.8% cabernet sauvignon, 14.6% merlot, 5% cabernet franc, 4.5% malbec, 4.3% petit verdot and 0.8% shiraz. A challenging year for red wines, except for cabernet and merlot, led to a mix of fermentation and maturation techniques, blended Aug ’17 but not bottled until Nov ’17. Needs 2 or 3 more years, but should over-deliver from that time on.”
